After years of working in my clay studio in evenings and weekends, and taking many regional workshops to refresh earlier college courses in clay, my encore career as maker began in earnest with the construction of my wood fire kiln in 2012. It is daunting to enter the field of clay after years in the company of professionally recognized masters, but also exciting. My previous professional career was in arts administration for 28 years, as ED of four arts organizations. First in Florida, then Arizona for 15 years, the last 12 as ED of the Tucson/Pima Arts Council, and from 2000-2010 as Director of the UNC Center for Craft, Creativity and Design. During this time I had the opportunity to work with some of the finest craft artists nationally and internationally. Soon after moving to North Carolina I began assisting Judith Duff with her wood firings and became a convert to this exploration of flame on clay.
